Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ajuga.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ajuga (1587 or earlier; from 18th cent. in scientific Latin as genus name, Ajuga ), earlier aiuga (1516 or earlier), probably originally an error for classical Latin abiga , kind of plant having the power to induce abortion (Pliny) < abigere drive away (see abigate v.).Post-classical Latin aiuga is found in 16th-cent. editions of Pliny (where modern editions read abiga), and in 16th-cent. Latin translations of Dioscorides.
Any plant of the genus Ajuga (family Lamiaceae ( Labiatae)), comprising herbaceous plants native chiefly to temperate regions of the Old World, which lack the floral upper lip characteristic of other plants of this family; esp. any of the cultivated varieties of the European common bugle, A. reptans, which are frequently grown in gardens as ornamental ground cover. Also (in form Ajuga): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) II. 561.
