单词 alexanders foot
释义

Alexander's Footn.

Brit. /ˌalᵻɡˈzɑːndəz ˌfʊt/, /ˌalᵻɡˈzandəz ˌfʊt/, U.S. /ˌæləɡˈzændərz ˌfʊt/
Forms: 1500s Alexanders foote, 1600s–1700s 1900s– Alexander's foot.
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: proper name Alexander , foot n.
Etymology: < the genitive of Alexander + foot n., after Middle French pied d'Alexandre (1547 or earlier); so called because it was supposed to have a root shaped like a foot, although the reason for the allusion to Alexander (presumably Alexander the Great) is unclear. Compare post-classical Latin pes Alexandrinus (1564 or earlier).
Now historical and rare.
The pellitory of Spain, Anacyclus pyrethrum, which was supposed to have a root shaped like a foot.
