Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Frisian deis (West Frisian deis ), Middle Dutch daghes (Dutch daags ), Old Saxon dages , Old High German tages (Middle High German tages ; German tags ) < the Germanic base of day n. + the Germanic base of -s suffix1. Compare nights adv.In Old English (and Middle English) formally a regular genitive singular of day n. (compare discussion at -s suffix1). In later use probably apprehended as a plural.
In the day; during the daytime. Frequently in opposition to nights. Now chiefly North American, except in to work days: to work during the day, as opposed to at night; to work a day shift. Cf. nights adv.See also far days at far adv. 3c, forth days at forth adv. 4b; cf. far-forth adv. 1b.
