Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin alexitericum, alexitericus.
Etymology: As noun < post-classical Latin alexitericum (1589 or earlier), use as noun of neuter of alexitericus (although this is apparently first attested later: see below). As adjective < post-classical Latin alexitericus (1621 or earlier) < alexiterium alexitery n. + classical Latin -icus -ic suffix. With the use as adjective compare Middle French alexiterique (c1580), also (with alteration after theriac theriac adj.) alexitheriac (c1560), adjectives, and also earlier alexiterial adj., alexiterical adj. With the use as noun compare Middle French alexiterique , noun (1568 or earlier) and earlier alexitery n.In β. forms probably after ancient Greek ἀλεξητήριος and ἀλεξητήριον (for both, see alexitery n. and adj.).
