Etymology: < a- prefix⁶ + ancient Greek λέξις speech (see lexis n.) + θυμός soul (see thymoleptic adj.), understood by the coiner, P. E. Sifneos (compare quot. 1972 at sense A.), to have the meaning ‘mood’ + -ic suffix. Compare earlier dysthymic adj. and n. at dys- prefix and schizothymic adj. at schizo- comb. form 2.
