Etymology: < French alezan (1534 in Middle French), use as noun of alezan , designating the horse's colour (although this is apparently first attested slightly later: 1552) < Spanish alazán (c1275 as adjective, designating the horse's colour, c1549 as noun, denoting the horse) < Spanish Arabic al-azʿar < Arabic al- the + azʿar reddish, red, with alteration of the ending after Spanish †roan roan adj.The word is apparently attested earlier as the name of a variety of hyacinth ( J. Justice Scots Gardiners Director (1754) 421).

Now rare.

1. Chiefly with reference to a horse: a sorrel or bright chestnut colour. Also as adj.
