Etymology: < Spanish regional (Tenerife) alfonsino (1905 or earlier; compare quot. 1905), specific use of Spanish (Canary Islands) alfonsino (also alfonsiño ), denoting various kinds of fish (a1812 in sense ‘sea robin’), apparently < Alfonso , the name of several Spanish monarchs (compare Alfonsine adj.) + Spanish -ino , suffix forming diminutives (see -ine suffix⁴), probably so called on account of its colour resembling royal robes.

Any of several deep-sea fishes of the family Berycidae, widely fished for food; esp. Beryx decadactylus and (more fully splendid alfonsino) B. splendens, which have deep, reddish bodies and large eyes.
