Etymology: < classical Latin alga seaweed, of unknown origin. Compare Middle French alga, alge (1551; Middle French, French algue), German Alge (18th cent.; compare earlier †alga (1493 with Latin inflection in a German context)).
Originally: a seaweed. In later use (chiefly in plural): any of a large, diverse group of chiefly aquatic organisms which are capable of photosynthesis, many of which are plant-like in form but lack the true stems, roots, leaves, and vascular tissue which characterize typical land plants. Also with distinguishing word.The algae form a polyphyletic group containing seaweeds and many unicellular and filamentous forms, some of which form large colonies. Certain photosynthetic microorganisms (such as cyanobacteria) were formerly classified as algae, but are now considered to be bacteria.blue-green, green, red, snow alga, etc.: see the first element.
