Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin -phōnia.
Etymology: < classical Latin -phōnia (in e.g. symphōnia symphonia n.1) < ancient Greek -ϕωνία (see -phony comb. form). Compare -phony comb. form.In sense 1 earliest attested in late 16th cent. in symphonia n.1 (compare earlier symphony n.) and euphonia n. (compare later euphony n.). Recorded in a small number of formations from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, mostly modelled on Greek or Latin words (or, in the case of mogiphonia n., modelled on German).
