Etymology: < classical Latin dēfatīgātiōn-, dēfatīgātiō physical or mental exhaustion, state of being worn out < dēfatīgāt- , past participial stem of dēfatīgāre defatigate v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare slightly earlier fatigation n. Compare also earlier defatigate adj. and later defatigate v.
Now chiefly Medicine.
The fact or condition of being tired out or exhausted; fatigue, (in later use often) spec. mental fatigue. Also: an instance of this; a cause of fatigue.rare between the late 17th and late 19th centuries.
