Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ϕυτόν.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕυτόν plant (see phyto- comb. form). Compare French -phyte, German -phyt, Danish -fyt.The earliest words containing this terminal element are zoophyte n. (17th cent.) and lithophyte n. (18th cent.). Most originate from the mid 19th cent. onwards. Many have precedents in German -phyt , Danish -fyt , or scientific Latin -phyta , as bryophyte n., chlorophyte n., cyanophyte n., metaphyte n., phanerophyte n. The use in medical terms (sense 2) originates in French.
