Etymology: Irregularly < classical Latin ambigere to dispute, quarrel, contend (see ambiguous adj.), apparently taken to be equivalent to ambīre to seek to obtain, strive for, aim at (see ambient adj.) + -ate suffix3.
Obsolete. rare.
