Etymology: < post-classical Latin delegatorius acting as a delegate (late 14th cent. in a British source), of or relating to delegation (16th cent.; earlier as noun: see note) < delegator (see delegator n.) + classical Latin -ius , suffix forming adjectives; compare -ory suffix2.Compare post-classical Latin delegatorius (short for delegatorius libellus delegatory document) document containing instructions (6th cent.), delegatoria (short for epistola delegatoria delegatory letter) dispatch containing instructions (4th cent.).
Of power, authority, etc.: that is of a delegated nature or type; (also) characterized by or involving delegation. Formerly also of a person: †holding delegated authority (obsolete).
