Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin deletivus ; delete v., -ive suffix.
Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin deletivus (13th cent.; 14th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin dēlēt- , past participial stem of dēlēre delete v. + -īvus -ive suffix. In later use re-formed < delete v. + -ive suffix.
