Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin ambitus; French ambitus.
Etymology: In sense 1 < classical Latin ambitus corrupt practice in electioneering, undue influence, bribery, specific use of ambitus ambit n. In sense 2 < French ambitus (1703) and its etymon post-classical Latin ambitus (14th cent. in this sense), specific use of classical Latin ambitus ambit n.
1. The action of seeking to obtain an office or position through underhand means; esp. the use of bribery to gain electoral support. Cf. ambition n. 6. Now historical, esp. with reference to Roman Law.
