Etymology: < Latin dēcrēscent-em, present participle of dēcrēscĕre to decrease v.: see -ent suffix. For the earlier spelling, compare crescent n.

Decreasing, growing gradually less. Chiefly of the moon: Waning, in her decrement; in Heraldry represented with the horns towards the sinister side. In Botany applied to organs which decrease gradually from the base upwards.
