Etymology: As noun < post-classical Latin amblotica, plural (1542 or earlier), use as noun of neuter plural of ambloticus (see below); as adjective < post-classical Latin ambloticus < Hellenistic Greek ἀμβλωτικός (of medicaments) that causes abortion < ancient Greek ἀμβλοῦσθαι to cause to miscarry (see amblosis n.) + -τικός , suffix forming adjectives from verbs (compare -ic suffix). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ̆mblǫ·tik) /æmˈblɒtɪk/.
Medicine. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
