Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Amblypoda.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Amblypoda, former order name ( E. D. Cope Syst. Catal. Vertebrata Eocene New Mexico (U.S. Army Engin. Dept.: Geogr. Explorations & Surveys) (1875) 28) < ancient Greek ἀμβλύς blunt (see amblygon n.) + ποδ- , πούς foot (see -pod comb. form) + scientific Latin -a -a suffix1.
Palaeontology. Now chiefly historical.
Any of various primitive hoofed mammals of the early Tertiary, typically having a heavy body, massive limbs, and stumpy feet, constituting the former order Amblypoda.This order is now regarded as polyphyletic and its members are divided among the orders Pantodonta, Dinocerata, and ‘ Condylarthra’.

1933 Amer. Jrnl. Sci. 225 423 Gidley's conception of a titanothere relationship has not been sustained, in fact, he later abandoned the idea in favor of amblypod affinities.
1985 D. Lambert Cambr. Field Guide Prehist. Life viii. 170 Amblypods (‘slow footed’) were early, ponderous hoofed herbivores with broad, low, ridged cheek teeth.
2006 K. D. Rose Beginning Age Mammals vii. 114/1 Pantodonts were long grouped with ungulates, either together with uintatheres as amblypods, as paenungulates.., or linked with arctocyonids.
