释义

decadencen.

/ˈdɛkədəns//dɪˈkeɪdəns/
Forms: In 1500s–1600s Scottish decadens.
Etymology: < French décadence (1413 in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter), < medieval Latin decadentia, Spanish decadencia, Portuguese decadencia, Italian decadenza ‘a declyning, a decaying’ (Florio), < decadēre to decay, < de- down + cadēre to fall (the Comm. Romanic representation of Latin cadĕre to fall; compare Spanish caer, French chéoir). The prevalent accentuation was formerly deˈcadence, perhaps after decay (see the dictionaries); ˈdecadence was ‘considered more scholarly’ c 1895 ( N.E.D.); it is now standard.
