1. As a modifier (with capital initial): designating the torture and execution of English and other traders on the Dutch colony of Amboyna (now Ambon Island) in Indonesia in 1623; relating to or reminiscent of this. Esp. in Amboyna massacre.Agents of the Dutch East India Company arrested, tortured, and executed twenty traders (ten English, nine Japanese, and one Portuguese) for allegedly plotting to take over the island. The incident soured Anglo-Dutch relations during a period of bitter trade rivalries.
