Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Ambrit.
Etymology: < German Ambrit (apparently 15 January 1861 in a paper read by K. von Hauer at a session of the Geological Institute of Austria-Hungary, published in Jahrb. der Kaiserlich-Königlichen Geol. Reichsanstalt 12 4; the coinage is attributed to W. von Haidinger by F. von Hochstetter Neu-Seeland (1863) xvii. 364) < English amber amber n.2 + German -it -ite suffix1, with elision of the unstressed medial -e-. The fossil resin was so named on account of its resemblance to amber.
Mineralogy.
A form of retinite known from deposits in New Zealand.

1905 G. P. Merrill Non-metallic Minerals xiii. 381 With the copal is often found the more amber-like resin ambrite, which has a slightly greater hardness.
2016 Progr. Chem. Org. Nat. Products 104 98 Cretaceous amber (ambrite) from New Zealand serves as an example for this class.
