Etymology: As noun < post-classical Latin defendent-, defendens defendant (from 13th cent. in British sources), use as noun of masculine of classical Latin dēfendēns, present participle (see below). As adjective < classical Latin dēfendent-, dēfendēns, present participle of dēfendere defend v. Compare earlier defendant n. and defendant adj.; some later uses probably show errors for these words.
