单词 delicatesse
释义

delicatessen.

Brit. /ˌdɛlᵻkəˈtɛs/, U.S. /ˌdɛlᵻkəˈtɛs/
Forms: 1500s delicates, 1600s– delicatesse.
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French délicatesse.
Etymology: Apparently < French délicatesse quality of being delicate (although this is first attested later: 1548), scrupulousness (1663) < délicat delicate adj. + -esse -ess suffix2, probably after Italian delicatezza (c1300). Compare earlier delicacy n., and later delicateness n.Compare Spanish delicadeza (15th cent.), Portuguese delicadeza (early 16th cent.), and also ( < French or Italian) German Delikatesse, †Delicatesse (early 17th cent. in the sense ‘quality of being delicate’, second half of the 17th cent. in the sense ‘exquisite item of food’). In the specific sense ‘exquisite item of food’, which is apparently not paralleled in French, after delicate adj. 1b.
The quality of being delicate (in various senses); an instance of this. Also: that which is delicate; a delicate thing, a delicacy. It is possible that quots. 1509 and 1540 may instead show the plural of delicate n., but in quot. 1509 the context and the French model make an abstract noun more likely, and in quot. 1540 the context seems to demand a singular.
