Etymology: < German †Delicatessen fine food collectively (now Delikatessen), plural of †Delicatesse exquisite item of food (now Delikatesse: see delicatesse n.).Compare Dutch delicatessen fine food collectively (1642). Sense 2 is either short for delicatessen store at Compounds 1 or so named on account of the sign Delicatessen over the shop's door; the German and Dutch nouns are not used in this sense.
1. Speciality foods, drinks, etc., often (esp. in early use) ones imported from other countries. Now rare.Recorded earliest in delicatessen salesmen; see Compounds 1.In early use chiefly referring to foreign food imports in German-speaking areas of Europe, and to traditional German specialities among communities of German heritage living elsewhere, esp. in the United States.
