Origin: A borrowing from Latin; originally modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: Latin dēlīmāt-, dēlīmāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin dēlīmāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of dēlīmāre to file down ( < dē- de- prefix + līmāre to file: see limate v.), originally after Italian delimare (end of the 15th cent. in the passage translated in quot. 1592).Compare Middle French delimer (end of the 15th cent.).
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To shave off or file the rough edges from the surface or outline of (an object or a design in relief). Also: to file (rough edges) from an object (apparently only in dictionaries). Chiefly in past participle.
