Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish descamisado.
Etymology: < Spanish descamisado, lit. ‘person without a shirt’ (1811 or earlier in plural descamisados denoting a Spanish revolutionary group, 1946 or earlier in plural as a self-designation of followers of Juan Perón in Argentina; a1424–1520 or earlier in sense ‘poor person’) < des- dis- prefix + camisa shirt (see chemise n.) + -ado -ado suffix. Compare earlier sansculotte n.
1. Also with capital initial. (A nickname given to) an ultra-liberal in the Spanish revolutionary war of 1820–3; also in extended use. Obsolete.
