Primary stress is attracted to the second syllable of this combining form and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. onomatopoetic adj.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ποιητικός.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ποιητικός (see poietic adj., and compare -poietic comb. form). Compare medieval Greek -ποιητικός , combining form (in e.g. ἠθοποιητικός ethopoetic adj.). Compare -poeia comb. form, -poiesis comb. form, and -poietic comb. form.Combining with first elements ultimately of Greek origin. Formations are found from the 17th cent.
Forming adjectives with the sense ‘creative, formative, productive’, as specified by the first element. Frequently corresponding to nouns in -poeia comb. form or occasionally to nouns in -poiesis comb. form.
