Etymology: < classical Latin dēlinquere to fail, be lacking, to misbehave, do wrong, to commit (an offence) < dē- de- prefix + linquere to leave (see linquish v.). Compare earlier relinque v. and (in different sense) earlier delinquish v.¹Compare (all in the different sense ‘to commit a fault or crime, to offend’) Anglo-Norman and Middle French delinquer, French délinquer, Italian delinquere (all early 14th cent.).

Obsolete. rare.

Probably transitive. To leave, abandon.Apparently only in Cockeram.
