Etymology: < classical Latin dēlinquere (see delinque v.) + -ish suffix2, after relinquish v.Compare Middle French (rare) delinquir to fail in one's duty or obligation (late 15th cent.; also in the senses ‘to abandon (a person)’ and ‘to commit an offence against (a person)’; the usual verb is délinquer), Old Occitan delinquir, Catalan delinquir (14th cent.), Spanish delinquir (14th cent.).
Obsolete. rare after 17th cent.
intransitive. To fail in one's duty or obligation; (more commonly) to commit an offence against the law or customary morality. Formerly also with †against a person.
