Etymology: < ancient Greek -πύρηνος, combining form (in e.g. ἀπύρηνος without stone or kernel) of πυρήν fruit stone (see pyrene n.¹) + -ous suffix. Compare pyrenous adj.First attested in English in the early 18th cent. (compare monopyrenous adj., a native formation, and polypyrenous adj., an adaptation of a Greek word). Originally combined with first elements ultimately of Greek origin, in later use also with numerals (compare quots. 1890, 1924).
