A form of the enzyme plasminogen activator produced by genetic engineering and used to dissolve blood clots in thromboembolic disorders such as myocardial infarction, deep venous thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism.Alteplase is a form of the tissue-type of plasminogen activator, as opposed to the urokinase-type. It is produced by a line of Chinese hamster ovary cells transformed with the human tissue-type plasminogen activator gene.
