Etymology: < scientific Latin -rhinus (in e.g. megarhinus megarhine adj.; also -rrhinus : compare e.g. Phyllorrhina (see phyllorhine adj.), Platyrrhini (see platyrrhine n.)) < ancient Greek -ρριν- , -ρρις , combining form (in e.g. ὀξύρρις oxyrhine adj. at oxy- comb. form¹ 2a) of ῥιν- , ῥίς nose (see rhino- comb. form). Compare French -rhin.Formations within English and adaptations of Latin words are found from the mid 19th cent. (For an isolated earlier borrowing with the same ending see errhine n.) Combining with first elements ultimately of Greek origin.
