Origin: Probably a borrowing from Irish, combined with an English element. Etymons: Irish altram , -age suffix.
Etymology: Probably < Irish altram the act of fostering, fosterage (Early Irish altram ; < ailim to nourish ( < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin alere : see aliment n.) + -tram ( < -tar, suffix forming verbal nouns, with an m- extension of unknown origin; compare com-altar joint fosterage)) + -age suffix. Compare Irish altra foster-father (Early Irish altru). Compare also Anglo-Norman alterage (1468 in an Act of Parliament relating to Ireland).
Obsolete (historical in later use).
In Ireland: the nursing and raising of another's child; such a system of fostering. Cf. fosterage n. 2.The Norman or English nobility often had their children fostered by the Irish in order to create and strengthen alliances with them.
