Origin: A borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymon: Afrikaans deurmekaar.
Etymology: < Afrikaans deurmekaar confused, disorganized, lit. ‘through each other’ < deur through ( < Dutch door through prep.) + mekaar each other < Dutch regional (now chiefly Belgium) mekaar , malkaar (Middle Dutch malcander ; contraction of manlijc anderen each other < manlijc each (see note) + anderen , dative plural of ander other pron. and n.). Compare throughother adj. and German durcheinander (adverb) mixed up, confused (see throughother adv.).Middle Dutch manlijc is cognate with or formed similarly to Old Frisian monlik- (in monlikōderum each other), Middle Low German manlīk , Old High German mannolīh (Middle High German mannelīch ), all in sense ‘every, each, (also as pronoun) everybody’ < the Germanic base of man n.1 + the Germanic base of lich n. (compare ylike adj.).
