Etymology: < classical Latin alternāt-, past participial stem of alternāre (see alternate v.) + -ly suffix2, probably after classical Latin alternātim alternatim adv.; compare Anglo-Norman alternatiment (a1321 or earlier). Compare later alternate adj., alternate adv., and also alternatively adv. and the French adverb cited at that entry.
