单词 dempster
释义

dempstern.

Brit. /ˈdɛm(p)stə/, U.S. /ˈdɛm(p)stər/
Forms: Middle English demstere, demestre, demester(e, demister(e, ( demmepster, demaistre), Middle English, 1600s demster, 1500s demstar, Middle English, 1700s–1800s dempster. See also deemster n.
Etymology: Middle English dēmestre , in form feminine of dēmere, deemer n., judge: see -ster suffix. The root-vowel was originally long: compare the modern form deemster n., used in the Isle of Man; but in general use it was shortened at an early date in consequence of the elision of the short vowel of the second syllable, and the collocation of consonants in demstre; whence the forms demster, dempster. Dempster is also a surname.
