Etymology: < Arabic allāhu akbar ‘God is most great’ < allāhu , nominative of allāh Allah n. + akbar , elative of kabīr great. Compare Takbīr n.With the forms with medial o , compare the β. forms at Muhammad n.; the form Allah o akbar may additionally reflect association with O int. Three-word spellings with ho , hoo , or hu as second element perhaps reflect reanalysis of the final -u in the first element of the Arabic etymon as the masculine 3rd person singular pronoun hu ‘he’. Quots. 1609 and 1615 probably either show misapprehensions of the Arabic liturgical formula, or are influenced by Arabic kabīr great (which is not used in the liturgical formula).

‘God is (most) great’: the declaration of the Takbīr, used in Islamic liturgical forms and prayers, and by Muslims as a general exclamation of faith, thanksgiving, etc. Cf. Takbīr n.
