单词 allayed
释义

allayedadj.

Brit. /əˈleɪd/, U.S. /əˈleɪd/, /æˈleɪd/
Forms: 1500s alayde, 1500s alayed, 1600s allaied, 1600s– allayed; also Scottish pre-1700 allayit.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: allay v.1, -ed suffix1; allay v.3, -ed suffix1.
Etymology: In senses 1 and 3 probably < allay v.1 + -ed suffix1. In sense 2a < allay v.3 + -ed suffix1. In sense 2b perhaps partly < allay v.3 + -ed suffix1, and partly < allay v.1 + -ed suffix1. See discussion at allay v.1 on the difficulty of assigning particular uses to either allay v.1 or allay v.3, which is reflected also by the material at this entry.Sense 3 could perhaps show a different word, < either a- prefix1 or a- prefix3 + lay v.1 + -ed suffix1.
Now rare.
1. That has been mixed or diluted with something; (also figurative) qualified, moderated. Cf. allay v.1 12. Obsolete.
