Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit devī.
Etymology: < Sanskrit devī goddess (also used as the name of the supreme Hindu goddess), (consecrated) queen, high-ranking woman, also use as respectful form of address, feminine corresponding to deva god (see deva n.).
Indian English.
