Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek δίχρους , -scope comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek δίχρους two-coloured (uncontracted δίχροος: see dichroous adj.) + -scope comb. form, after dichroism n.In German contexts, the instrument and its name (German Dichroskop (1845 or earlier)) are often associated with W. von Haidinger (compare quot. 1851), but it is likely that he borrowed the word from English. With the forms dichroöscope, dichrooscope compare -o- connective. With the form dichroiscope compare -i- connective.
Any of several instruments, typically hand-held, for observing or examining the dichroism of crystals and gemstones, often with a view to identification.
