Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin amīcālis.
Etymology: < classical Latin amīcālis friendly (2nd cent. a.d.) < amīcus friend (see amyke n.) + -ālis -al suffix1, after ancient Greek ϕίλιος , ϕιλικός (see -philic comb. form). Compare French amical (15th cent. in Middle French in an apparently isolated attestation; subsequently from the 18th cent.). Compare inimical adj.
Now somewhat rare.
