dickn.2

Origin: Of multiple origins. Either (i) from a proper name. Or (ii) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: proper name Dick ; dicky n.1
Etymology: Probably either < Dick, pet form of the male forename Richard (see dick n.1), or shortened < dicky n.1 (compare dicky n.1 3a).A suggested connection with Dutch dek covering, roof (see deck n.1) in specific application to a person's clothing (19th cent., rare), a bedcover, or a cloth covering for a cow, horse, etc. seems much less likely.
English regional. Obsolete.
An apron, esp. one made of leather. Cf. dicky n.1 3a.

dickn.4

Brit. /dɪk/, U.S. /dɪk/
Origin: Probably formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: detective n.
Etymology: Probably a playful or arbitrary shortening of detective n., perhaps after Dick , pet form of the male forename Richard (see dick n.1).A suggested connection with Romani dikh- to see (see deek v.) is semantically plausible but difficult to reconcile with the early evidence.
slang (originally and chiefly U.S.).
