Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian amico.
Etymology: < Italian amico friend, also as form of address (12th cent.) < classical Latin amīcus friend (see amyke n.).With sense 2 compare earlier borrowing of Italian bello amico, bell'amico (13th cent.):1852 A. H. Dorsey Woodreve Manor xiv. 199 ‘I will very soon come with the picture; then, bello-amico,’ he said, pressing the medallion to his lips, ‘you come back to my heart’.
