Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin -sis; Greek -σις, -τις.
Etymology: < classical Latin -sis and its etymon ancient Greek -σις, variant (with assibilation) of -τις < an Indo-European suffix forming nouns (see -t suffix3, -th suffix1).Attested occasionally in Latin loans in the Old English period (e.g. genesis n., paralysis n.), and subsequently in the Middle English period (e.g. arsis n., thesis n.) and later. Many loans are ultimately < Greek, with transmission often via Latin, sometimes also via French or other European languages. Formations within English occur sporadically in the 17th cent. (acephalisis n., anagrapsis n.), and subsequently from the 19th cent., but are much rarer than borrowings or adaptations. Compare -asis suffix, -osis suffix, and also -iasis suffix.
