Etymology: < post-classical Latin amicus curiae, literally ‘friend of the court’ (1593 (in a theological context) or earlier) < classical Latin amīcus friend (see amyke n.) + cūriae , genitive of cūria court (see curia n.).In the plural form amici curiae after the Latin plural form. N.E.D. (1884) gives only the pronunciation (ăməi·kɒ̆s kiū·riī) /əˈmaɪkəs kjuːrɪiː/.
Law.
Originally, and still in some jurisdictions: an impartial adviser to a court of law who assists in some matter affecting a particular case, esp. by drawing attention to points which might otherwise fail to be mentioned. Subsequently also, esp. in the United States: a person or body that is not a party to the suit but files a brief advocating on behalf of an organization or entity with a legal or political interest in the case. Also in extended use. Cf. friend of the court n. at friend n. and adj. Phrases 6.
