Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: devil n., -ed suffix2; devil v., -ed suffix1.
Etymology: Partly (in sense 1) < devil n. + -ed suffix2, after inflected and participle forms of Hellenistic Greek δαιμονίζεσθαι to be possessed by a demon (see demonize v.), and partly (in sense 2) < devil v. + -ed suffix1.
1. Possessed or tormented by a devil or evil spirit. Obsolete.

(also occasionally in singular) eggs prepared with spicy seasonings (see sense 2); (chiefly North American) a dish typically consisting of hard-boiled eggs, halved, in which the yolks are removed, mashed with mayonnaise, mustard, etc., and spooned or piped back into the hollowed whites, and the whole is dusted with paprika.
