Scholl Catal. des plâtres des ossemens fossiles 7)) < ancient Greek δεινός fearful, terrible (see dinosaurian adj.) + θηρίον wild beast (see therio- comb. form). Compare earlier megatherium n. and slightly later dinothere n.In the form deinotherion remodelled after ancient Greek θηρίον.The form dinotherium is persistent, probably owing largely to the influence of dinosaur, though the original and accepted form of the scientific Latin genus name is Deinotherium.

Palaeontology.

A very large proboscidean mammal of the extinct genus Deinotherium, having downward-curving tusks extending from the lower jaw, and known from fossils from the mid Miocene to early Pleistocene periods, mainly in Eurasia; a dinothere.
