Etymology: < ancient Greek -σώματος, combining form (in e.g. ἀσώματος lacking a body, incorporeal; compare also Hellenistic Greek δισώματος double-bodied, πολυσώματος many-bodied, etc.) of σῶματ- , σῶμα body (see soma n.²) + -ous suffix.Apparently earliest in the late 18th cent. in asomatous adj.

Forming adjectives designating entities or organisms having a body of the type, or bodies of the number, specified by the first element, as disomatous adj., heterosomatous adj. at hetero- comb. form , etc. Also: forming adjectives corresponding to scientific Latin taxon names in -soma, as trypanosomatous adj. at Trypanosoma n. Derivatives, etc.
