devoteadj.n.1

/dɪˈvəʊt/
Etymology: < Latin dēvōtus devoted, consecrated or dedicated by vow, past participle of dēvovēre to devote v. In English it appears partly as a continuation of Middle English devot , -te , variant of devout adj. and n., Old French devot , devote . As a noun it was generally superseded 1675–1725 by devotee n., and when retained later is usually identified with modern French dévote (feminine), and applied only to a female devotee, the corresponding French dévot (masculine), being occasionally used of the male.
