Etymology: < post-classical Latin amissibilis capable of being lost (4th or 5th cent. in Augustine), capable of losing (6th cent.) < classical Latin āmiss- , past participial stem of āmittere to lose (see amit v.) + -ibilis -ible suffix. Compare French amissible (1671). Compare earlier amissibility n., and also amission n., amit v., amissive adj.
